The following email was sent from one U6 coach to another following their game on October 17, 2008 (reprinted with permission):
Neil,
First of all, I would like to tell you it was a pleasure to coach against a team that was out for the same thing as us... To have fun!
It was great to see all the fans you guys brought with you, and with our fans, that made for a great crowd in the kids honor.
I do want to acknowledge your fans for the absolutely wonderful thing they did.
Our team has a child with Down Syndrome. He tries to play hard, but does not have a lot of confidence in tight when the other kids are very close to him. Friday he got the ball and ran like mad! He kept going as hard as he could for about 30 yards, until he finally got to the goal and scored... In the wrong net. The next few minutes are to be locked in my memory forever. He raised his arms and celebrated with all the joy he had. He got a goal!! To him, it did not matter where, just that it was in.
My first thought was to look at his Mom, to see her reaction, but I could not look there without noticing the entire fan base... Your fans and ours... Celebrating with him! What a beautiful thing. No one cared about anything at that moment, but for his joy. I was proud for him.
I finally looked at his Mother who was noticing his joy, but also noticing the crowd celebrating with him. It truly warmed her heart. As it did mine. It should. I am his Dad. His very proud Dad.
Please thank your parents for teaching everyone a lesson on the field Friday. Joy has no team. It just has fans.
God Bless,
Troy S. Memis
